1. The termites above are about double size on a 1024x768 monitor. They are actually very small. Termites are common in Texas

2. If you do not have them your going to get them.

3. If you have had them you may get them again.

4. Treatment cost and quality vary.

5. Almost every home 15 years old in North Texas has had termites and treatment

TERMITES

Termites are common in Texas. There are basically three types of species and only one of those three thrive in the DFW area.

Subterranean termites are easily found in DFW

Formosan and Drywood termites are less frequently found and are often imported in woods brought into the area.

Termite control measures include using chemicals, baits and exclusion methods. The chemical method has been the most common.

Inspection and treatment for termites is done by individuals licensed and regulated by the Texas Structural Pest Control Board.

Many people moving in from other states are often surprised to find there is no such thing as a "bond" or "guaranty" related to the termite inspection. The inspection reports conditions seen at the time of inspection and areas that are obstructed are not covered by the inspection.

The vast majority (almost safe to say all) homes experience termites and treatment. If you are buying a home older than 10 to 15 years you should expect ongoing or past termite activity. It is a fact of life in most regions of Texas.

Texas A&M has a great internet site that explains the subject thoroughly. The photos on this page are from Texas A&M and the University of Toronto.

Pictures of swarmer or reproductive termites. These show up generally on the first warm humid spring day, often the day after a good rain. They only keep their wings for a few hours. The vast majority die before finding shelter. They are a scary experience but are not harmful. Just vacuum them up. No need to spray pesticides. Then call your pest control company so they can locate the activity and perform professional treatment. Photos from University of Toronto.

Swarmer termites occur in the early spring in DFW. They carry their wings for only a short period of time.

These are worker termites. These are the insects that live inside the dirt tunnels and eat the wood. These are a bit yellow. They are actually creamy white.

This is a soldier. The soldier guards the colony. Although it looks fearsome it is so small that it cannot hurt a human.

Termites seem to eat the softer woods and leave the harder woods behind.
